Cape Coast Experience

Cape Coast Castle

Cape Coast Castle (SwedishCarolusborg) is one of about forty “slave castles”, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese “feitoria” or trading post, established in 1555, which was named Cabo Corso.

Elmina Castle, fortified castle in Elmina, Ghana, that is thought to be the oldest surviving European building in Africa south of the Sahara. Built in 1482 by the Portuguese to protect the gold trade, Elmina Castle later became a major center of the transatlantic slave trade.

It is one of only 3 locations in Africa with a canopy walkway, which is 350 metres (1,150 ft) long and connects seven tree tops which provides access to the forest. The most notable endangered species of fauna in the park are Diana monkey, giant bongo antelope, yellow-backed duiker and African elephant.
